RAMALLAH, The PLO Executive Committee today affirmed support for President Mahmoud Abbas’ push for full recognition of the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)’s upcoming session.
The Committee, which convened under the chairmanship of President Abbas at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, lend its full support for the latter’s push to win full U.N. membership for the State of Palestine.
President Abbas is scheduled to deliver a key speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23, during which he will be asking for the recognition of the State of Palestine as a full member under occupation.
The Committee discussed the latest political developments in the Palestinian arena, focusing on the Israeli aggressive escalation against the Palestinian people, including extrajudicial killings, daily detention raids, and unabated construction of colonial settlements.
It reiterated that all Israeli occupation measures, including the above listed, are intended to undermine the Palestinian people’s struggle for freedom as well as for the realization of its inalienable rights, mainly the right to self-determination and the establishment of the independent and fully sovereign state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with relevant resolutions adopted by national consensus and PLO parameters.
Commenting on the importance of President Abbas’ upcoming speech, the Committee members stated that the speech is a cry out for the international community to assume their role in support of the Palestinian people’s struggle, oblige Israel to abide by the international law and all relevant resolutions, including UNGA and UNSC resolutions.
They added that President Abbas’ upcoming speech would constitute a call for the international community to halt the policy of double standards in dealing with the Palestinian question, especially on the issue of human rights violations, exposing the US administration’s policies biased in Israel’s favor and complicity in Israeli crimes, proceed with the efforts to boycott and sanction the Israeli occupation, and accelerate the mechanisms that would pave the way for the International Criminal Court to open a formal investigation into crimes committed by the Israeli occupation.
They affirmed their determination to continue actively and vigorously pushing for the states that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so; so that Palestine would become a full member of the UN ten years after the UNGA passed a resolution upgrading the P.A.’s status to that of non-member observer state.
