PM Shtayyeh: UN vote on nature of the occupation a new victory for Palestinian cause on the road to liberation

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh today considered the majority vote at the United Nations General Assembly for a resolution requesting a legal advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the nature of the Israel occupation of the Palestinian territories a new victory for the Palestinian people and their just cause or the road to achieving their freedom and national independence by establishing their independent state on June 4, 1967, lines with Jerusalem as its capital.

“The UN resolution is of exceptional importance in timing as it coincided with the ascension to power in Israel of the extreme religious right, which threatens the Palestinian people with more violations of their legitimate rights, the continuation of the aggression on their land, infringement of their rights, property and resources, and the violation of the sanctity of their Islamic and Christian holy places,” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

He called on the International Court of Justice to expedite the issuance of the legal advisory opinion in order to end the occupation and to stop the crimes, threats and violations; which it continues to commit benefitting from a sense of impunity.

Shtayyeh also called on the United Nations to take actual steps to provide international protection for the Palestinian people until a legal advisory opinion is issued by the world’s highest judicial institution, thanking the countries that voted in favor of the resolution while calling on those that voted against or abstained to reconsider their position in order to be consistent with UN resolutions.
