Premier urges EU to take serious action to confront racist policies of new Israeli government

RAMALLAH, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called today on the European Union to take serious measures in advance to confront the racist policies of the upcoming Israeli government that threaten the very existence of our people.

Shtayyeh’s call was made in a meeting with the ambassadors, consuls and representatives of the European Union countries to Palestine on the occasion of the launch of the Palestinian-European dialogue at the Prime Minister’s office in Ramallah.

Shtayyeh said during the meeting that the racist policies of the upcoming Israeli government “threaten the existence of our people, our state and our institutions, because what will happen is not a change in the person of the Prime Minister, but rather a complete change in the political system towards more extremism and violence.”

“We want Europe to play an effective role and take measures to protect the two-state solution in light of all the Israeli measures that are destructive of any opportunity to establish a Palestinian state,” he continued.

Shtayyeh said “the inaction of the international community may encourage Israel to persist in its violations, and Europe should place its economic weight behind its political stance,” demanding the EU to pressure Israel to respect and abide by the agreements signed with the Palestinians and to respect human rights and international law.

On the election file, the Prime Minister pointed out that “all Palestinians want the elections to be held in all Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem, and holding elections in Jerusalem is a political issue, not just a technical issue. We want the European Union to work alongside the United States to pressure Israel to allow the elections to be held in all Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem, and to allow all of our people to participate as candidates and voters.”

“The political statements issued by the European Union and its countries are important, but we need action on the ground, such as boycott of Israeli settlement products and their educational institutions, and taking action against settlers who hold European nationalities,” said Shtayyeh.
