Premier urges immediate action to save life of hunger-striking prisoner al-Fasfous

RAMALLAH, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called yesterday upon international human rights and humanitarian organizations to immediately act to save the life of Palestinian prisoner Kayed al-Fasfous, who has been on hunger strike for 123 days.

Fasfous, 34, from the southern West Bank town of Dura, has been on hunger strike to demand an end of his indefinite administrative detention without charge or trial by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Doctors at the Israeli Barzilai Medical Center, where Fasfous is being treated, yesterday told his family that its son was nearing sudden death after 123 days of hunger strike.

“International human rights and humanitarian organizations are required to take urgent action to save the life of Fasfous, whose medical reports suggest that his health has entered the stage of severe danger,” said Shtayyeh in a statement published by Ibrahim Melhem, the government’s spokesperson.

Shtayyeh also called for an end of the Israeli policy of administrative detention, which allows Israeli authorities to imprison Palestinians indefinitely without charge or trial.

Earlier yesterday, Fasfous’s brother, Hasan, told WAFA that doctors at Barzilai told him that his brother had developed symptoms suggesting a clot in his blood, which is an early warning of the risk of sudden death.

He said his brother is also experiencing an intermittent loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeats, tingling in the chest, a decrease in blood pressure, kidney and heart problems, a shortage of fluids in his body and recurring pains and aches across his body.
