Presidency warns of dangerous consequences of Israeli settlement plans in Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, President Mahmoud Abbas’s office warned today of the dangers of Israel’s plans to build hundreds of housing units for Israeli settlers in several illegal settlements surrounding the occupied capital Jerusalem, saying these plans will cut off the city from its Palestinian surroundings.

“Such projects are a challenge to international law and international legitimacy, the signed agreements and the commitments repeatedly expressed by the US administration, in which it affirmed that it considers settlement expansion and unilateral measures an unacceptable act,” said the President’s office in a statement.

The statement urged the US administration to maintain its positions and implement what President Joe Biden announced during his call with President Mahmoud Abbas, in which he affirmed his rejection of any unilateral measures.

Israel’s plan “to establish the new settlements will push matters to a point of no return,” and will “push the region into more tension and explosion,” added the President’s office.

The Presidency stressed that the roadmap announced by President Mahmoud Abbas during his recent speech before the United Nations is clear, and represents an important initiative in which he stressed that the situation is no longer sustainable.

“The path to peace is clear: establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the statement concluded.
