President Abbas congratulates Guterres on winning second term as UN chief

RAMALLAH, President Mahmoud Ababs extended today his congratulations to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres after the latter was sworn in for a second term in office.

In a cable letter, the President extended his heartfelt wishes to the UN chief on behalf of the Palestinian people and leadership, saying his re-election to a second term in office was a result hard work, dedication and commitment to many global issues.

In his letter, President Abbas urged the UN Secretary-General to continue his efforts to hold an international peace conference on the basis of the international resolutions, and under the auspices of the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the Middle East Quartet.

He said the goal of this conference is “to reach a permanent solution that ends the Israeli occupation of the land of the State of Palestine with its capital, East Jerusalem, resolves the issue of Palestinian refugees in accordance with United Nations resolutions, and puts an end to the suffering of our people who have been struggling for more than seven decades.”

“We’re keen to continue working with you to achieve this noble goal and other goals that promote stability and peace in the world,” the President concluded.
