Russian Scientists Detect Massive Sunspots That Could Be Most Dangerous in Years

Geneva: A cluster of large sunspots has appeared on the far side of the sun and could become one of the most dangerous sunspot groups observed in recent years, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Russian Academy of Sciences has reported. The massive sunspot cluster is being monitored by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, the laboratory said.

According to Oman News Agency, scientists consider this new centre of solar activity to be among the largest detected in recent years. A similar phenomenon occurred two years ago, triggering a series of eruptions that caused the strongest magnetic storm in two decades.

Solar flares can generate magnetic storms on Earth, affecting power grids and the migration patterns of birds and animals. Strong storms can also disrupt shortwave communications and navigation systems, while increased solar activity could expand the geographical range where the aurora borealis is visible.
