Paris: The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, a body of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), currently being held at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris. Oman's delegation at the meeting is led by Amina Salim Al Balushi, Permanent Delegate of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO.
According to Oman News Agency, the session addresses the registration of more than 30 new sites on the World Heritage List while reviewing the status of 250 registered sites to assess the environmental and development challenges they face. The session includes working sessions on issues related to UN-registered heritage sites, such as the impact of climate change, ways to engage local communities in site protection, developing sustainable management methods for sites at risk, and assessing the competitiveness of plans aimed at preserving the exceptional values of sites on the World Heritage List.
Oman's participation in the session reflects its commitment to protecting cultural and natural heritage, ensuring this dedication is passed to future generations. It also enhances Oman's international presence in cultural forums, supports the nation's heritage portfolios, and affirms its commitment to the principles of the "International Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage."
Omani sites registered on the World Heritage List include Bahla Fort (1987), the archaeological sites of Bat, Al Khatm, and Al Ayn (1988), five aflaj-traditional irrigation systems (2006), sites known as "the Land of Frankincense" (2000), and the ancient city of Qalhat (2018).
