Spain Extends Border Controls on Travellers from Italy Until 22 September

Muscat: Spain has extended temporary border checks on passengers arriving from Italy by air and sea for an additional 15 days, citing what Madrid described as a serious threat to public order and internal security.

According to Oman News Agency, the extension, effective from 8 September until 22 September, applies to travellers arriving at Spanish airports and ports whose last point of departure was in Italy, based on a decision by the Interior Ministry.

The measures are subject to continuous review and may be lifted early if the conditions that prompted them subside, the decision stated. Any further extension beyond 22 September would require a reasoned decision and an updated assessment under Schengen border rules.

Spain reinstated the checks on 8 August for an initial 30-day period, citing persistent irregular migration pressures along the central Mediterranean route and the potential for migrants to move from Italy to other Schengen countries.
