Oman and UK Strengthen Long-Standing Diplomatic Ties

London:The Sultanate of Oman and the United Kingdom share a deep-rooted historical relationship, spanning several centuries and encompassing cooperative partnerships across multiple sectors. In a continuation of these strong ties, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik is set to visit the United Kingdom, following an invitation from His Majesty King Charles III. This visit underscores the commitment of both nations to further enhance their friendship and collaborative efforts across various fields.

According to Oman News Agency, the Sultan of Oman aims to strengthen international relations grounded in mutual respect, peace, and security. His previous meeting with King Charles III at Windsor Castle in July 2025 focused on leveraging the historical ties between the two countries for mutual benefit. The late Queen Elizabeth II had also acknowledged these bonds by awarding Sultan Haitham the Order of the Knight Grand Cross in 2021.

The two nations have a long history of agreements, including the Unshook Treaty over 200 years ago and more recent ones like the Joint Defence Agreement and the Comprehensive Agreement on Enduring Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation in 2019. These treaties cover various sectors such as politics, military, culture, and economics, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing security and prosperity for both their peoples.

In 2022, Oman and the UK signed an investment partnership agreement to boost high-value investments, particularly in fields like clean energy and information technology. Trade between the two nations has been robust, with Oman recording a trade surplus in 2025 and continued growth in trade and investment in 2026. The UK remains the largest foreign investor in Oman, with direct investments increasing annually.

The Oman-UK Joint Working Group, established in 2010, continues to foster cooperation, addressing commercial and investment issues and enhancing collaboration in education, vocational training, and tourism. The British Omani Society and the Omani-British Friendship Association further promote cultural and educational exchanges.

Oman's Ambassador to the UK, Badr bin Mohammed Al Manthari, emphasized the importance of the upcoming Royal Visit, which aims to expand cooperation in fields like renewable energy, technology, education, and defense. The visit also provides an opportunity to discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest, aligning with Oman Vision 2040.

UK Ambassador to Oman, Dr. Liane Saunders, highlighted the significance of this visit as the first state visit since 1982. It seeks to achieve tangible outcomes in economic, cultural, and educational partnerships, supporting Oman's strategic plans for economic diversification and regional diplomacy.

Faisal bin Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Dr. Khalid bin Said Al Amri, Chairman of the Oman Economic Association, both underscored the potential for deeper economic relations, focusing on sectors like renewable energy, digital economy, and advanced industries.

The visit is seen as a pivotal moment in reinforcing the economic and investment dimensions of Omani-British relations, paving the way for future strategic partnerships and mutual prosperity.
