Muscat: Nama Power and Water Procurement has signed power purchase agreements with a Nebras-led consortium and a KOWEPO-led consortium for the development of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power generation projects in Misfah and Duqm, respectively. This initiative involves a total investment value of approximately RO 1 billion.
According to Oman News Agency, the signing ceremony was conducted under the auspices of Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals. The Nebras-led consortium, which includes Etihad Water and Electricity Company PJSC and Bahwan Infrastructure Services LLC, will develop the Misfah Power project. Meanwhile, the KOWEPO-led consortium, comprising Nebras Power Q.P.S.C., Etihad Water and Electricity Company PJSC, and Bahwan Infrastructure Services LLC, will undertake the Duqm power project.
The CCGT projects in Misfah and Duqm are set to utilize advanced combined cycle technology, aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Once operational, these projects are anticipated to significantly contribute to the stabilization of the national grid and support economic and industrial growth across Oman.
The power plants are designed to accommodate advanced CCGT technology and are equipped for future integration with carbon capture systems, representing a leap in generation efficiency and resource sustainability. This aligns with the Sultanate of Oman's strategic move towards a low-emissions energy system.
Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi noted that the projects in Muscat and Al Wusta governorates represent a strategic step in strengthening the national energy system, aligning with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the Net-Zero Target 2050. He emphasized that these projects are crucial for enhancing Oman's power generation infrastructure through high-efficiency technologies, with gas turbines designed to operate on a fuel mix containing up to 30% hydrogen.
Eng. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nebras Energy, expressed confidence in the projects' contributions towards meeting Oman's increasing electrical power demand and creating job opportunities for Omani talents. Similarly, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the UAE's commitment to sustainable energy cooperation, supporting the development of efficient generation capacity in Oman.
The strategic location of the Misfah project enhances supply reliability in Oman's largest electricity demand centers. Meanwhile, the Duqm project is positioned within a promising economic hub, benefiting from robust infrastructure and playing a pivotal role in regional economic development.
Ahmed bin Salim Al Abri, CEO of Nama Power and Water Procurement, emphasized the long-term, future-ready approach to power generation reflected in these projects. The projects are designed to accommodate advancements in carbon emissions reduction technologies, including higher hydrogen proportions within the gas mix, aligning with Oman's net zero commitment by 2050.
Eng. Mohammed Nasser Al Hajri, CEO of Nebras Energy, and Jung Bok Lee, CEO of Korea Western Power Co., Ltd, both expressed their commitment to delivering these projects to high standards, ensuring stable and reliable operations. Hind Bahwan, Chairperson of Bahwan Infrastructure Services, highlighted the shared commitment to strengthening Oman's power infrastructure and enhancing energy security, creating lasting economic value for Oman and its people.
