Foreign Minister: UN report’s findings affirm need for international community to end occupation

RAMALLAH, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Maliki welcomed today the report issued yesterday by the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, saying the report affirms the need for the international community to end the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Al-Maliki stressed in a statement the importance of the UN Commission of Inquiry’s conclusions that there are reasonable grounds that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land has become illegal under international law due to its prolongation.

He stressed the importance of the Commission’s call for the United Nations General Assembly to issue an urgent resolution requesting the ICC to submit an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s continued refusal to end its illegal occupation of Palestine.

Al-Maliki called on the international community and the UN Security Council to assume their responsibilities and act quickly to confront the dangerous reality imposed by the Israeli settlements that create permanent Israeli control over the West Bank.

Al-Maliki called on the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to take into account the conclusions of the UN Commission of Inquiry regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity and to take steps that would speed up the completion of the criminal proceedings.

He stressed that a peaceful and just solution to the Palestinian issue requires an end of the double standards to maintain the credibility of a rules-based international order.
