GCC States Intensify Efforts to Combat Desertification

The gulf cooperation council (gcc) member states continue to strengthen their endeavors to protect land resources and restore degraded ecosystems:tat) noted that all GCC member states ratified the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) between 1996 and 1999. This early ratification reflects the region's sustained attention to addressing land degradation and drought challenges, while promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.

According to Oman News Agency, the Centre further reported that the number of civil society organizations accredited to the UNCCD within the GCC states has reached 14 entities. These organizations serve as a vital complement to governmental efforts by supporting environmental initiatives, raising public awareness, and contributing to the protection and sustainability of natural resources.

The Centre stated that the GCC states accord particular significance to rangelands as a critical natural resource underpinning food security and biodiversity conservation. Member states have implemented national regulatory frameworks governing rangeland management, curbing overgrazing, regulating seasonal grazing patterns, and adopting land stewardship practices that ensure long-term sustainability for future generations.

In the context of reinforcing international cooperation to combat desertification and drought, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is spearheading the "Silk Road Campaign" initiative. This initiative aims to bridge the outcomes of the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD-hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh in 2024-with the upcoming seventeenth session, scheduled to convene in Mongolia in August 2026. The campaign seeks to consolidate global efforts in support of land restoration and the enhancement of adaptive capacity to climate change.

The Centre underscored that the observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought represents a pivotal opportunity to highlight the importance of investing in the restoration of degraded rangelands and adopting sustainable land management practices. Such measures are instrumental in advancing food security, reinforcing ecosystem resilience, and contributing to a more sustainable future for the GCC member states.
