New york: The Sultanate of Oman took part in the 15th session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) at the UN headquarters in New York, USA. The Omani delegation was led by the Acting Chairman of the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority at the Ministry of Defence.
According to Oman News Agency, the meeting explored various aspects of geospatial information management. Key discussions revolved around enhancing governance frameworks, the impact of regional committees on the global geospatial agenda, and the role of thematic networks in advancing geospatial data initiatives. The future of geospatial information ecosystems was also a significant topic of discussion.
The agenda included the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF), the Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF), and the application of geospatial data in sustainable development, climate action, and environmental applications. The session also covered legal and policy frameworks, reference data management, emerging technologies, and the implementation and adoption of global geospatial standards.
Participants reviewed the role of UN Global Geospatial Information Management Centers, which operate outside the headquarters, in strengthening global geospatial data governance. The session was organized following relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council to facilitate discussions on the proposed agenda.
