Muscat: The Municipal Council of Muscat Governorate held its first meeting of the year today, chaired by Sayyid Saud Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat. The Council initiated discussions on the contemporary issue of social media, digital media, and electronic games and their impact on mental and behavioral health.
According to Oman News Agency, the meeting included a presentation by a consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry. The analysis highlighted the psychological and behavioral effects of excessive digital media use, such as addiction, concentration disorders, declining academic performance, and the influence of violent content on youth behavior. The Council emphasized the need for an integrated response system with preventive, educational, and therapeutic programs to protect youth and support families amidst digital developments, moving towards sustainable institutional solutions.
Additionally, the Municipal Council reviewed its work program for 2026, focusing on participatory tracks to enhance its role in monitoring local affairs. This program aims to support developmental efforts, monitor priority projects, and improve community communication and institutional performance through specialized programs and initiatives.
The Council also approved the minutes of its last 2025 meeting, endorsing recommendations to shift the Muscat Municipality's commercial activity inspection methodology from pre-inspection to post-inspection. This change seeks to improve the inspection system's efficiency and responsiveness while aligning with legislative and regulatory frameworks. The Council stressed the importance of continued coordination between Muscat Municipality and other authorities to enhance the business environment and improve commercial activity procedures.
Lastly, the Council reviewed communications from various authorities about organizational and service-related aspects. It highlighted the importance of ensuring effective procedures that respond to current requirements and align with local development priorities.
