Lebanon: Lebanese authorities today called on the United States to pressure Israel to halt its ongoing attacks inside Lebanon, even as a ceasefire between the two sides remains in place.
According to Oman News Agency, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon since 2 March 2026 has risen to 2,869, including dozens killed since the ceasefire took effect on 17 April 2026. Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam both urged US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa to press Israel to stop continued assaults and violations in order to stabilise the ceasefire. The appeal comes as preparations are underway for a third direct meeting between Lebanese and Israeli representatives scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Washington.
The request followed intense Israeli airstrikes over the weekend that extended beyond southern Lebanon, reaching areas about 20 kilometres from Beirut. Israel struck more than 30 locations in southern and eastern Lebanon, with casualties reported, Lebanon's National News Agency said.
The Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for nine Lebanese towns - seven in the south and two in the western Beqaa region. A large wave of displacement followed from the towns of Mashghara and Qaliya in the western Beqaa, the agency reported.
Despite a ceasefire announced and extended by US President Donald Trump, Israel continues to carry out strikes, demolitions, and house detonations in border towns. The Israeli military said that one of its soldiers was killed in clashes near the Lebanese border, raising its death toll since the start of the war to 18.
