The 99th round of the Conference of Supervisors on Palestinian Affairs in the Host Arab Countries kicked off on Monday at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo.
In his speech at the opening session of the five-day conference, head of the Refugee Affairs Department in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the head of Palestinian delegation, Zakaria al-Agha, reviewed the Israeli violations against the Palestinian people in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
He also highlighted the impact of cut in US aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) on the refugee situation in the host countries.
This threatens the ability of UNRWA to provide its services to the Palestinian refugees, he stressed.
The Palestinian official said that the US Administration’s cut in its financial contributions to UNRWA’s budget, which coincided with the Israeli government’s demand to end its role, are part of the US political blackmail.
Agha reiterated the PLO’s rejection of the US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, pointing out that this decision was met with international rejection for its blatant violation of the principles of the United Nations.
He urged the Arab countries to quickly meet their annual commitment of providing UNRWA with 7.8 percent of its budget in order to save the relief agency from the current financial crisis.
For his part, Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Palestine and occupied Arab lands, Saeed Abu Ali, warned against the unprecedented and dangerous developments in the Arab region.
Speaking at the opening session, Abu Ali said the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital tops these developments.
He added that the US decision undermines chances to achieve peace based on the two-state solution.
Trump proved his bias to Israel, Abu Ali said, adding that this move represents a clear disregard of all inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
The event witnessed the participation of Arab host countries, Palestine, besides the Arab League General Secretariat, Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).
