RAMALLAH, Central Elections Commission Hanna Nasir today briefed an EU official on the ongoing preparations for the upcoming general elections.
Nasir welcomed EU Representative Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff and the accompanying delegation at the CEC headquarters in al-Bireh city, where he briefed them on the efforts and preparations for holding the elections and reviewed the various stages of the electoral process culminating in the nomination of candidates for the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections.
He discussed with Burgsdorff prospective Israeli obstacles to holding elections in the city of Jerusalem as he called on the European Union (EU) to exert pressure on the Israeli side to implement the signed agreements, which provide for Jerusalemite Palestinians to participate in elections in the city.
Burgsdorff underscored the EU support to holding elections throughout the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, commended CEC on its preparatory work to ensure fair, transparent and democratic elections as he called on all parties to exert all the necessary efforts to ensure successful elections.
