National Organ Transplant Programme Transfers Two Kidneys Between Specialized Centres in Oman.

Muscat: Oman's Health Ministry's National Organ Transplant Programme set a new medical milestone by transferring two kidneys from brain-dead donors (based in Royal Hospital) to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital at the University Medical City. According to Oman News Agency, Dr. Qassim Mohammed Al Jahdhami, Head of the Organ Donation Department at the National Organ Transplant Programme, stated that the first such transplant operation was carried out on 22 October 2024, followed by the second transplant operation on 5 November 2024. He added that the first kidney transplant was performed at the Royal Hospital, while the second kidney transplant took place at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. The kidney transfer operations were conducted on two patients suffering chronic kidney failure, but they didn't happen to have living donors. Dr. Qassim pointed out that the time factor was crucial to the success of the two operations, since organs can only be preserved for a limited number of hours before the trans plant. The first transfer took 34 minutes, while the second took 27 minutes, said Dr. Qassim, noting that the transfer process reflects the participating medical teams' efficiency of planning and implementation.
