UN Human Rights Chief Urges Israel to Repeal Death Penalty Law Targeting Palestinian Prisoners

Jerusalem: The United Nations has called on the Israeli occupation authorities to annul a law passed by the Knesset reinstating the death penalty, a measure applied almost exclusively to Palestinian prisoners. Volker Trk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the legislation as discriminatory in a press statement, asserting that it violates Israel's obligations under international law.

According to Oman News Agency, Trk voiced deep disappointment over the Knesset's approval of the draft law, underscoring that it runs counter to Israel's international legal commitments, particularly regarding the right to life. He cautioned that the law raises grave concerns over breaches of due process and must be urgently repealed.

The High Commissioner also stressed that such a punishment is inherently irreconcilable with human dignity and significantly heightens the risk of judicial executions of innocent individuals. The Israeli Knesset ratified the bill last Monday in a move aimed at imposing the death penalty on Palestinian detainees held in occupation prisons-a decision that has drawn sweeping international reproach.
