Doha, October 10 (QNA) – Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Director General-elect Bishar Hussein said Wednesday is a historic day for the union and for him as he was elected to the post during the 25th Universal Postal Union Congress, currently held in Doha.
”Great challenges lie ahead for the UPU in the upcoming period, Hussein told QNA, explaining that the financial difficulties imposed by the global economic crisis that swept the world a few years ago, in addition to the effects of climate change all affect the work of the union.
“We hold the expectations of member states, and we will make every effort to achieve the goals and hopes for which we were elected,” Hussein said.
Hussein hailed Qatar’s efforts in the organization and management of the conference. “The Qatari government has done an excellent job for the success of this important global conference. There is no doubt that all member states and participants are pleased with this interesting and significant Qatari effort.”
Pascal-Thierry Clivaz, who was elected as UPU Deputy Director General, expressed his delight at his victory, noting that his election is a success for his country and a gift for its accession of the United Nations.
Speaking to QNA, Clivaz said he will discuss UPU’s programs and plans for the next phase with the new director general, and will work with him to achieve the aspirations of the member states and promote the work of the union.
Clivaz singled out Qatar’s organization as the reason for the success of the conference. “The Qataris have done a great job. We are very pleased and came out with excellent impression.” (QNA)
